Hi, my name is Nicole. The purpose of this fund raiser is for a wheelchair accessible van. I’m in my early 60’s and have a spinal cord injury as a result of a car accident, during my first year of college. I was studying psychology and dance, when it all abruptly came to an end. A few years later, after the accident, I learned how to drive a car with a hand control (special adapted driving equipment.) This allowed me to drive independently, giving me the freedom that was lost after the accident. However, before I drove anywhere, I had to transfer into the driver seat, lean over, disassemble my wheelchair, lift and pull each wheel and lift and pull the body of the chair into my car. Then, when I reached my destination, I reversed the process and reassembled my chair. After many years of repeating this task, it caused a lot of wear, and tear on my elbow and shoulder joints. It became necessary for someone to help put the wheelchair in my car and accompany me. This has greatly limited my activities. Not having freedom to come and go independently, has caused me to feel shut in, isolated, and depressed. It would be a dream come true for me to own and operate a wheelchair accessible van, equipped with a ramp and hand controls, allowing me to roll right in. By having a wheelchair accessible van, I would no longer have to be dependent on others. It will give me the freedom to go to doctor appointments, physical therapy, grocery shopping, social outings and community events, etc… My plan is to purchase a used van. I have limited financial resources, but will contribute to my own cause as much as I possibly can. I am deeply grateful for any and all donations to help me reach my goal. Shares are also appreciated. Thank you to all, Nicole
