On October 1, 2014, Grace at the Greenlight (Homeless Outreach), a 501c3 nonprofit serving the homeless in the New Orleans area, began an initiative to reunite homeless individuals with their loved ones through our “I'm Going Home” program! Founded by Christopher Beary, who is also the Board Chair, we have been able to send over 455 people home so far.Recently, we were able to help “C” and her 5 year old son reunite with her sister. “C” fled an abusive relationship and was stranded in New Orleans. “C” worked diligently for a week, trying to get she and her son into a local women’s shelter, but there was just no room. She was then referred to us and we were able to send her (via Greyhound bus) and her son to live with her sister. C’s sister was delighted to give “C” and her son a home until “C” is able to get on her feet. We were also recently able to help a man named Dayvid. Dayvid is a middle aged man who had worked to support himself his entire life, until he was diagnosed with cancer. Dayvid had no insurance and the cancer treatments were too expensive for him to afford. He lost his job because he had to take time off of work being sick, lost his home, car, and all he had. Dayvid came to us in a desperate situation. Fortunately, Dayvid’s sister in Florida was willing to provide him a home. We provided transportation and food for Dayvid to be reunited with his sister and get off of the streets of New Orleans.These are some of the stories that we hear every day. We would love for YOU to be a part of our “Going Home” program. We are looking for sponsors who are willing to reunite the stranded and homeless with their loved ones. We follow-up with each person at intervals of one week, one month and three months.
