Bella Run Equine recently assisted rural county law enforcement with a large seizure and subsequent cruelty and neglect case. Twenty-one animals came to our farm after being rescued from a nightmarish property in Vinton County, Ohio. While House Bill 24 allows for a cost-of-care bond to be ordered to alleviate the financial burden on the rescues who are holding animals for criminal cases, this was not the case for us. This meant that we had to hold and support all of these animals without adopting them out... for months. Our rescue's already-humble bank account took a staggering hit, to the tune of almost $17,000, in an effort to rehabilitate, provide proper veterinary care for, and hold all of these animals while the court process continued at a sluggish pace. Eventually, charges were dropped and restitution was forfeited in exchange for ownership of the animals. All of the animals were awarded to Bella Run Equine. While absorbing the cost of this case is daunting, the animals never going back to their owner was our number one priority. This means that while we are grateful that all of these animals have been surrendered to us, we will not be receiving a penny in restitution from the abusers, who have subsequently tried to do even more damage to our rescue beyond this financial hit. We will not fold. We will rally and recover. Today, we humbly ask for your help. Please donate and share. Help us say "yes" the next time we are called to action.
