Hello, my Janelle and I am asking for you to find it in your heart to help my granddaughter, Mackenzie. It all began 15 years ago when I first received a call from Florida from a woman named Katie who worked at a Steakhouse with my daughter and stated that the manager was going to call Child Protective Services. Katie added that the manager had observed multiple instances of neglect and a period of time when my 22-year-old daughter and her significant other would leave 14-month-old Mackenzie home alone. My daughter and her significant were neck-deep in addiction to the point where my daughter has still not recovered to this day. When I arrived, I observed no food in my daughter’s home, piles of dirty clothes, and drugs everywhere. I immediately filed for custody and was thankfully granted custody. My daughter signed away custody of Mackenzie on a bar napkin. Fast Forward to June 2024 when my daughter evicted us from the home, we had lived in for 43 years. My mother who had helped me buy the house had signed the deed with her estate. When my mother passed away, the estate was divided, and the majority of my mother’s estate was given to my daughters. My daughters who both suffer from addiction evicted my granddaughter and me to feed their addiction. Out of concern for our welfare, a family friend offered us refuge with them in Minnesota while we got on our feet. Due to the financial hardship caused by the pandemic, the family was no longer able to afford the house and it was foreclosed leading my granddaughter and I to be unexpectedly homeless for a second time. Scared and alone in Minnesota, we turned back to move to Western, PA where we were couch surfing and attempting to receive help. At rock bottom, my granddaughter and I ended up living at a crime-ridden hotel for an extended period. Out of the best interest of the well-being of my granddaughter, I reached out to CYF for help. Working alongside CYF, social workers, and the grace of God I was able to obtain safe and suitable housing for my granddaughter; we have been living in a stable home for 2-3 months now. Throughout this long traumatic experience, my granddaughter took up the high school activity of color guard as a therapeutic escape. In the color guard program at the new school my granddaughter will be attending the group is going to a once in a lifetime trip to Pearl Harbor to do a show honoring the anniversary of Pearl Harbor. Due to the unfortunate recent traumatizing events, we are not able to afford the trip. Additionally, because of us moving around given the circumstances we missed all of the opportunities to fundraise. It breaks my heart to have seen her go through so much since that day 15 years ago when I received that call. Could you please find it in your heart to help make my granddaughter Mackenzie’s dream come true of attending this event?
