The Open Hands Cafe opened at Woodchurch Methodist Church at the beginning of March 2024 after receiving a grant from Wirral Council as part of the Cost of Living/Warm Spaces grant programme. The grant is just for 12 months to fund a Cafe Manager as well as help with the food costs and bills for opening the space. It also covered 12 months of an online advice provision for 2 sessions a week. The Woodchurch estate has seen its resources lessen over recent years and there are not many places where residents can meet up with others for a brew and a chat. The Open Hands Cafe aims to be a warm, welcoming space for anyone and everyone with affordable, healthy food. It is a place to meet up with friends or make new ones. We are hoping to develop the range of activities you can get involved with whilst you are here maybe trying your hand at something new. Over the cold season, we'll also host an evening of food and fun for any adults on the estate free of charge to help tackle the pressure of fuel bills and isolation. I've been involved with the cafe since applying for the grants and want to see this valuable space continue to be available for the community for many years to come. So I am challenging myself to 12 months of a Sweet Surrender to raise money for the cafe development. I will have to withstand the temptation of being surrounded by lovely homemade cakes and desserts. I will have to say no to the offers of biscuits and chocolates often shared by people who attend. I will give up all the cherry coke that I usually guzzle and in its place, I commit to give £2 a day to the cafe fund and hope that others will support me and hold me accountable for my surrender. I will post pictures on our Facebook page Open Hands Cafe of the things I am missing out on over the year. Many of these will be available at the cafe. When you feel sympathy for me, want to encourage me or just be generous to the cafe please offer this in terms of a monetary donation to help us on our way. Thank you in anticipation of your generosity, let's support the Woodchurch community together.
