I created this LFEBridge on behalf of my caring, hard-working boyfriend, Shane McGhen. On July 3rd, a group of us got together for a “4th of July” gathering at Shane’s, which ended in a way no one expected. After grilling out, Shane anticipated giving us a firework show for the holiday’s celebration. With the first flick of the lighter, his life changed permanently. The mortar (equivalent to a 1/4 stick of dynamite) blew in his right hand, and the lighter blew in his left. This traumatic incident left him with two blown eardrums, shrapnel in his eyes, burns to his face, torso, and arms. The explosion left his right palm dismantled, two digits partially amputated, and his thumb fractured into multiple pieces. From the lighter, his left hand sustained multiple burn injures. While in UPMC Presbyterian’s Trauma unit, he had multiple fragments (which is believed to be pieces of the lighter) removed from his eye. The damage to his eye will require future surgery to maintain ample vision. Regarding his blown eardrums, they will be reassessed in 90 days to decide whether they will require surgery. Due to his injures, Shane will be unable to work for an extended period of time. Shane has worked incredibly hard for everything that he has, and does not deserve to lose it all by the flick of a lighter. Many people have reached out asking how they can support Shane in this time of need. I hope to ease the financial burden so he can focus on giving 100% toward his recovery. Anything and everything is greatly appreciated, and will be used solely to benefit Shane in the months to come. Thank you for all the prayers, and kind words. We will be updating his progress as he begins his healing journey.
