I am the daughter of Bill and Sandra Hewlett. My dad, Bill, passed away 9 years ago. My parents had been married almost 52 years when he passed. Yesterday, July 13, 2024, my mom suffered another devastating loss. The home she has lived in for the past 20 years burned to the ground taking with it 78 years of possessions, memories, and things that can never be replaced. This was a very fast moving brush fire from a neighbor a couple of properties over. It moved so fast that she got out with only the clothes on her back and her 2 dogs. She didn't even grab a purse or her medications. The clothes she was wearing were farm clothes to work and feed her animals. Mom does have insurance and the essentials and material things can be replaced. The wedding album, my dad's flag from his military funeral, her dad's flag from the same...those things are gone. We are incredibly thankful that my mom is ok and none of the animals were hurt. If my mom had been in the shower or inside the house unaware, today might have looked so very much worse. So, we are trying to take that as the blessing it is. My mom is now living with us. The devastation comes in waves as we try to sort through all the logistics. The pain is going to take a long time to sort through. For now, we are trying to take things one step at a time. The most urgent priority at the moment is that we are trying to rehome her animals. We call my mom Elly May Clampett (for those old enough to know who that is). Thanks to her, I have bottlefed more unusual baby critters in my lifetime than anyone else I know and I take pride in that. My mom has 30 sheep, 6 goats, 5 donkeys, and 2 mini horses. The donkeys are a family and need to stay together. The mini horses are a mother and daughter and need to stay together. The remaining herd can be separated as needed. If everyone that reads this can help spread the word to help find homes that would be amazing. These are pets not a cash crop. They are older (15 - 20 years old). Most of them have names. They are free to a good home. The funds I thought we should try to raise is simply to care for them until we can rehome them. Since this happened many people have reached out wanting to know how they can help or contribute. The love we have felt from family, my mom's church friends, community friends, my coworkers and friends, etc has been truly amazing. Thank you all for wanting to help.
