Neurodivergent is the term for when someone’s brain processes, learns or behaves differently from what is considered “typical.” Neurodiverse people think, process thoughts and experiences, and interact with the world around us in a unique way. Studies have shown that being ND can bring enhanced capabilities such as strong creativity, analytical thinking and deep focus. Around 1 in 5 people are Neurodivergent - but did you know that Neurodiverse people are 8 times more likely to be unemployed than neurotypical people? And did you know that 7/10 young people who are excluded from school have SEN or a Neurodiverse condition? Do you want to join me in making a difference? My name is Lauren, I'm 20 years old and I have Tourette's Syndrome. My Tourette's impacts almost every area of my life, but one of the hardest things to deal with is the public perception and misinformation surrounding the condition. I'd love to change this and show everyone what neurodiversity really is! I'm raising money for the National Neurodiversity Youth Council - a visionary project lead by young people to ensure their voice is included in neurodiversity advocacy. We are a national project that has created a forum of 20 passionate young people, aged 16-24, to represent each charity in the coalition. The Council will work collaboratively to bring youth voices into the national conversation around neurodiversity. These young people aim to support others overcome health challenges, educational underachievement and barriers to employment by advocating for change in education, health and employment policies and services. OUR OBJECTIVES: >Amplify voices - The group aims to create opportunities to ensure that young people are heard. >Influence change - to meet with ministers/government officials to stress the importance of change. >Celebrate Neurodiversity - We will be advocating for neurodiversity to encourage others to be proud. OUR MISSION: >Personal development - We are planning an educational visit to Auschwitz Poland to learn about discrimination and exclusion and why it is imperative that young people have a voice. We aim to ensure that young people are heard and included in education, health, employment and opportunities for active citizenship. >United Nations - One of the first goals of the Council is to petition UN officials and commissioners at The United Nations Office at Geneva. Here we will advocate for visibility, inclusion and opportunity for young people with neurocognitive differences to contribute to policies and procedures that affect them. >Increase awareness - We will focus on the challenges faced by neurodiverse young people such as the increased risk of anxiety, depression and educational exclusion that can eventually result in unemployment and economic dependencies. Your donation will help us achieve our aims and make a difference to the lives of ND people. Young people with neurodiversities deserve better, and we are hoping to do them proud.
