To celebrate Lulu turning 1 and for her blessing we wanted to give back and raise some money for The Royal London NICU and also to Borne , a charity who research the cause of Pre Term birth and support families who need them in the hardest days. On the 1st November last year I went to what I thought was a very normal 34 week midwife appointment. I had tried to move it as I had a meeting in York the next day and we had just moved house 2 days before - life was just busy. Little did I know that I wouldn't leave the hospital until the 14th November as I had sudden and severe pre-eclampsia, not something that tends to happens on third babies. I really had no idea what was about to unfold and had put feeling rubbish down to the move/work/ having two young children - how wrong I was. Our little Lua was born six weeks early weighing 1.6 kg on 3rd November. She was immediately taken to NICU, not seeing her for 24 hours whilst I started my recovery was agonising. When I was allowed to be wheeled over I still hadn't managed to comprehend that our first meeting would be in such an alien environment. Lua was in her incubator, attached to a lot of wires, with feeding tube and the sound of constant beeping was overloading. Lulu stayed for five days in NICU before being moved to SCBU and then finally coming home on 21st November. We could never say enough thank yous or find the right way to even begin to say thank you, as there are no words to express such deep gratitude to the Maternity, NICU & SCBU team, community Neo-nats nurses and even to her current Neo-nats doctor. All things considered we were very lucky, our mountain although big to us was a small hill compared to the journey of others. Post birth Lulu dropped her weight to 1.5kg and we had to patiently wait for her to be able to maintain temperature, gain weight, fight off a small infection and establish feeding before she could leave the unit. Moving house, having two girls at home under four and recovering from pre-eclampsia made these days long and lonely at times. The support we had made these days easier and for those who showed up and continue to do so we will be forever grateful. Big love & thank you for making Lua's first Birthday and Blessing a very special one Annajane, Mehmet and the rest of the Guzel clan.
