Many of us in our local community are witnessing the growing population of homelessness everywhere. Though we cannot fix it, we can certainly try and help. I am sure many of you have witnessed sitting on the sidewalk while in traffic along Ave San Luis next to the freeway at Fallbrook Ave. That homeless woman and her dog are Roxanne & Bella. Roxanne and her tan, shaggy dog have been homeless walking the streets of the west end of the valley often just standing around and panhandling at the freeway offramps. This beautiful dog, Bella is always under the bus bench trying to avoid the heat. We learned that both are suffering terribly. From extreme skin conditions, ear infections and infected paws, and dehydration. Roxanne too, is not in the best of health with severe burns on her body from a car fire years back that has been left untreated. It is heartbreaking to see. Roxanne has been on the streets for a few years now after falling on hard times amidst the chaos of the pandemic. She and Bella are very loyal to one another, with Bella always being on the lookout to protect Roxanne. Over the last year, our family has helped Roxanne and Bella with food, water, medical supplies and veterinary bills for Bella. As summer is upon us and the heat is extreme, this past Saturday we saw Roxanne and Bella on the streets at their worst, and in desperate need of help Bella was not able to walk because her paws were so severely burned from the heat. In addition to us buying her new clothes, medical supplies, food and water, we elected to house Roxanne and Bella at the Best Western Hotel in Canoga Park for two nights. There she was able to take a shower, bathe Bella and eat some decent food. We witnessed this sweet dog thank us as she jumped up on us with licks and a wagging tail, as she then drifted off to sleep on the bed from pure exhaustion. Roxanne was in tears with extreme gratitude. There are several challenges ahead for these two and we need to keep them off the streets. Bella is not leash trained which is a big problem for many of these housing facilities. Our ultimate goal is to try and get Roxanne and Bella into the Samaritan Center in Simi Valley. There are a few other local facilities that we are looking into as well. We are working very hard to try and make this happen. We are asking you, our local community, in addition to our continued support, to help with donations of any denomination to keep these two homeless souls off the street until such time we can find them temporary and or permanent housing. Please, let's help Roxanne and Bella! Best, Stacye and Todd Bernstein
