‘Awapuhi Labyrinth has been a beloved Hawaiian Paradise Park community resource since 1999. From sunrise to sunset 365 days a year, we offer visitors, free of charge, a place to walk, contemplate, and enjoy nature. The Labyrinth hosts annual Solstice evening walks, musical and other events, even weddings. The mana here is deep. For this, and so many other reasons, everyone wants to build in HPP, right? Now a neighbor plans to build directly behind the Labyrinth, and who can blame them? Good fences –or in our plan, robust bamboo plants– make good neighbors. Our goal for this campaign is to raise the funds necessary to plant bamboo barriers in two locations at the labyrinth. The first is a 135-foot stretch separating us from our new neighbors. The second is a smaller strip to protect the privacy of our caretaker, William, who lives on site to lovingly and discreetly watch over the place. What’s our plan? How will we spend your contributions? Funds raised go first to the purchase of mulch and the delivery and spreading of it. Then we purchase and/or seek donations of clumping bamboo, especially varieties that are fast growing and drought resistant. We’ll also need to purchase containers and fertilizer for at least 24 to 30 plants. There will be costs for labor. We have conservatively budgeted $2000 to cover these costs. Any contributions beyond our goal will be dedicated to further Labyrinth repairs, maintenance, and improvements. As progress inevitably bears down on us, won’t you help us continue to provide our community with this precious breathing space in an environment of seclusion and serenity? For those of you who haven’t yet visited this special place in person, e komo mai! The labyrinth is located here in Hawaiian Paradise Park on the Big Island of Hawai‘i. Visit our website, too, and get on the mailing list.
