Sylvie and her two children, ages 5 and 8, have been sleeping on the streets of Portland since May. They fled the Congo after she was raped and her husband, a politician and activist, was beaten and kidnapped from their home by the military. They made the dangerous 4,000-mile journey from Brazil to the U.S. on foot. To this day she does not know where her husband is, or if he is dead or alive. Maine Africans Asylum Resource Center (MAARC) locates housing for homeless asylum seekers, raises funds for their security deposits, connects them with ongoing rental assistance, and provides for their educational and integration needs while they await eligibility for work permits. MAARC is raising funds to support Sylvie's security deposit for a new apartment, as well as the security deposits for several more available units for asylum seekers just like Sylvie.
