Vorige maand was ik met Nicchelle in Nigeria voor mijn podcastdocumentaire. Hier ontmoetten we Timi en Adunni, twee Nigeriaanse grassroots activisten die met hun organisatie Queercity Media and Productions aan een veilige plek voor de queer gemeenschap willen creëren. Tijdens onze reis gingen we op bezoek bij het community centre dat ze hebben opgezet en dat was een hele bijzondere ervaring voor ons. Dit soort plekken zijn ontzettend belangrijk in een land waar 10-14 jaar celstraf staat op het hebben van een homoseksuele relatie. Timi: “There’s not a lot of physical safe spaces for queer people, which is the reason why our community space is very needed and we need to keep building it. We need a space where queer people can just walk in and be people. All that you can’t do in your parent’s house, come and do it in our spaces.” Het community centre is momenteel niet ideaal ingericht: het bevindt zich op een ontoegankelijke plek en het gebouw wordt gedeeld met een queerfobe buurman. Bovendien kregen Timi en Adunni onlangs bericht van de verhuurder: het huurcontract loopt af. Ze moeten er binnen 2 maanden uit. Met de stijgende prijzen in Nigeria is dit een grote uitdaging, maar het biedt ook kansen om naar een groter en veiliger compound te verhuizen. Hier kunnen ze in ieder geval de komende 2 jaar zitten om aan hun missie te werken: het bouwen van een queer community plek. Een Queer Community Centre in Lagos Timi en Adunni zijn hard bezig met hun zoektocht naar een nieuwe plek voor hun community centre. Ze hebben verschillende gebouwen op het oog die wat meer centraal gelegen zijn en waar meer veiligheid is voor de gemeenschap. Ze hebben een hoop dromen voor deze plek: “We want to move to a self-compound where we are the only people on the property. So that for example all of the walls outside could be for exhibitions of queer artists. If you feel unsafe, or you feel tired, don’t go to your coffee store. Go to QueerCity community space. We have a coffee machine!” – Timi Naast het hebben van een gemeenschappelijke ruimte biedt dit centrum ook tijdelijke huisvesting voor trans femmes. Vanuit haar organisatie FemmeHive organiseert Adunni dit nu ook al in het huidige centrum. Hier kunnen trans vrouwen en femmes tijdens hun transitie 3 maanden kosteloos verblijven terwijl ze hun weg vinden. Verder moet het centrum een ontmoetingsplek zijn waar queer mensen kunnen socializen, maar ook werken. De uitdaging Huisvesting kost geld, en geld is er niet. Queercity Media wordt uiteraard niet door de overheid gesteund. “Our goal is to open our new centre by the end of September. We don’t know how. One thing I’m not going to lie about: it’s not like we have people to text, it’s mostly going to be us googling: who’s going to support? I don’t even have savings, because all my money goes into this.” – Timi Hier komen wij in actie. Als onderdeel van de queer gemeenschap weten wij maar al te goed hoe belangrijk het is om een veilige plek te hebben. Een plek waar je jezelf kan zijn in alle vormen. Een plek waar herkenning is en liefde. Het is zo belangrijk dat deze ruimtes overal bestaan, maar al helemáál op plekken waar LHBTQIA+-ers gecriminaliseerd zijn. Daarom komen we in actie en we hebben jouw hulp nodig. Wat kun je doen? ✅ Doneer! Als je wat kunt missen, doneer dan alsjeblieft. Het doelbedrag is 20.000 euro. Voor dit geld kunnen we twee jaar aan huur + services, security, meubels en basisbehoeften zoals voedsel en drinken betalen. Omdat LHBTQIA+-organisaties zich tot voor kort niet formeel konden registreren in Nigeria i.v.m. anti-LHBTQIA+-wetgeving, werken we niet met bonnetjes, facturen, etc. We vragen dan ook jullie vertrouwen in ons, Timi en Adunni met het geld. We geloven dat Timi en Adunni als queer personen in Lagos zelf het beste weten hoe ze dit centrum kunnen opzetten en hoe de middelen besteedt worden. Dit doen ze immers al jaren vanuit eigen zak. Over de organisatoren Nanoah is activist, schrijver, spreker, podcast- en contentmaker en zelfstandig ondernemer. Momenteel maakt hen een podcastdocumentaire voor Omroep Zwart. In deze podcast probeert hen hun Nigeriaanse identiteit met diens queer identiteit te verenigen. Nicchelle is projectmedewerker, spoken word artiest, onderzoeker en poëziedocent. Verder ondersteunt die Nanoah bij het maken van diens podcastdocumentaire. Adunni is schrijver, onderzoeker en cyberthreat analist. Momenteel is ze actief als Director of Programming bij QueerCity Media en als directeur van FemmeHive, een organisatie voor trans vrouwen in Nigeria. Timi is de oprichter en directeur van Queercity Media and Productions. Queercity is een Nigeriaanse mediaorganisatie met als missie het produceren van verhalen en het documenteren van de levens van queer mensen in West-Afrika. Het begon als podcast, maar onder de vlag van Queercity organiseerde Timi ook de eerste openlijke LHBTQIA+-open mic in Nigeria. Verder is Timi samen met Adunni betrokken bij het organiseren van Lagos Pride. ENGLISH VERSION Introduction Hi everyone! Last month, Nicchelle and I were in Nigeria to work on my podcast documentary. In Lagos, we met Timi and Adunni, Nigerian trans/queer grassroots organisers working to create a safe space for the queer community with their organisation Queercity Media and Productions. On our trip, we visited the community centre they set up, which was a really wonderful experience. Spaces like this are incredibly valuable in a country where having a homosexual relationship is punishable by 10-14 years in jail. Timi: “There’s not a lot of physical safe spaces for queer people, which is the reason why our community space is very needed and we need to keep building it. We need a space where queer people can just walk in and be people. All that you can’t do in your parent’s house, come and do it in our spaces.” The set-up of the community centre is not ideal at the moment: it‘s in a location that’s difficult to access and the building is shared with a queerphobic neighbour. Timi and Adunni recently received a message from the landlord: their rental contract is about to expire. They have to vacate the premises within 2 months. With rising prices in Nigeria, this is a major challenge, but it’s also an opportunity to move to a larger and safer compound. Here, they can stay for at least 2 years to work on their mission: building a queer community space. A Queer Community Centre in Lagos Timi and Adunni are working hard to move the community centre to a more accessible safer space. They have several buildings in mind that are more centrally located and include security guards. They have lots of dreams for this place: “We want to move to a self-compound where we are the only people on the property. We have a coffee machine!” – Timi In addition to the common area, the community centre also provides temporary housing for trans femmes. With her organisation FEMMEHIVE, Adunni already offers this service in the current center. Trans women and femmes that are on their transitioning journey can stay for 3 months at no cost while they find their path. Additionally, the center will be a meeting place where queer people can socialise but also work. The challenge Housing costs money, and there is no money available. The government evidently offers no support to Queercity Media. “Our goal is to open our new centre by the end of September. We don’t know how. One thing I’m not going to lie about: it’s not like we have people to text, it’s mostly going to be us googling: who’s going to support? I don’t even have savings, because all my money goes into this.” – Timi This is where we come in. As members of the queer community, we know how important it is to have a safe place. A space where you can be yourself in all forms. A place where there is recognition and love. It is so important that these spaces exist everywhere, but especially in countries where LGBTQIA+ people are criminalised. That's why we're taking action and we need your help! After all, they have been doing this out of their own pocket for years. About the organisers Nanoah is an activist, writer, speaker, podcast and content creator and independent entrepreneur. They are currently making a podcast documentary for Omroep Zwart. In this podcast they try to unite their Nigerian identity with their queer identity. Nicchelle is a project officer, spoken word artist, researcher and poetry teacher. They also support Nanoah in making their podcast documentary. Adunni is a writer, researcher and cyberthreat analyst. She is currently active as the director of programming at QueerCity Media and as Director of FEMMEHIVE, an organization for trans women in Nigeria. Timi is the founder and president of Queercity Media and Productions. Queercity is a Nigerian media organization whose mission is to produce stories and document the lives of queer people in West Africa. It started as a podcast, but Timi also organised the first ever open LGBTQIA+ open mic in Nigeria through Queercity. Timi is also involved in the organisation of Lagos Pride together with Adunni.
