Short Update: Miso has nearly reached our initial, $3,000 goal. THANK YOU to everyone who has already donated. We have increased our fundraising goal to $5,000. Half of whatever we raise over the $3,000 will go towards more miso, more sake, and bar repairs we were going to do next year. We will donate the other half to a program that provides support for victims of domestic abuse within the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe. You can find a more in-depth update at the bottom of the donation page. Hello, friends of Miso! TL:DR -- Many Miso campers are taking a year off, which means our budget is short this year. We need your help to buy water and soup supplies so we can bring our gift to the Playa in 2024. ____ Miso is celebrating its 10th year as a camp. Each year has been a unique blend of magic and challenges, and this year is certainly no exception. This year, a bunch of Miso people are taking a break from the Burn, resulting in a significant decrease in the number of people camping with Miso. Instead of our usual 50, we currently have less than 20 confirmed campers. We get our funding entirely from camp dues (we haven’t found a rich sugardaddy… yet), so with less than half the normal campers, we have less than half the normal budget. We've been coming up with some creative solutions to overcome this hurdle: We're cutting unnecessary expenses, finding clever ways to be more efficient, minimizing our infrastructure, and increasing camp dues for those who can afford it. Despite our best efforts, these changes can only take us so far. We’ve got overhead, and more importantly, we’ve got a duty to serve up piping hot, salty miso to all of our dehydrated friends out on Playa. We’ve run the numbers, and, simply put, we need your help. In our time of need, we are turning to you – our guests, our patrons, our friends and our compadres – for a helping hand. We are asking for donations to pay for water, soup paste, and sake that we will serve to your fellow burners. Your donations will directly go to camp overhead, including Hot Miso Soup and Sake! $10 = 10 bowls of Miso $20 = 10 bowls of Miso and 20 carafes of sake Without help, we will need to serve less sake and less miso this year, and we don’t want to do that. Any amount you can offer will earn you eternal gratitude and free miso for life. Even if you don’t donate you still get those things, so, frankly, it's not a great deal. But hey, we figured we’d ask. We don’t need much. We run a tight ship at Miso and with the cuts we’ve planned, we will only need $3,000 to cover our basic costs and still bring our gift to the Burn for you all. With just a little bit of help, we can do what we do best – turn fremented bean paste into life-giving soup. If we can raise a little bit more than the bare minimum we need, that money will go towards a bigger sake budget, making important repairs to the bar, and to necessary maintenance on our front-of-house and back of-house infrastructure. It's not an ideal situation. We are trying our best to make up the budget deficit ourselves. We're passionate about making our gift as extraordinary and enchanting as possible. And we hope that with your help, we can do just that. To be honest, it feels a little odd to ask for donations when there are countless causes out there that need it more. However, we don't see any harm in asking and seeing what happens. If you appreciate what we provide and can spare a few shekels, we would be immensely grateful. And if you have even more to give, we've compiled a list of remarkable non-profits that do incredible work for those in need: https://www.againstmalaria.com/ https://plpt.nsn.us/victim-services-program/ (This Paiute organization works to provide support for victims of domestic abuse -- they don't have a direct link to donate, but you can send them a physical check) https://sogoreate-landtrust.org/donate-update-draft/ https://www.bayareacs.org/donate/ https://amazonfrontlines.org/donate/ No matter what happens, you will see us out there this year. But we want to honor the Miso legacy and treat our offering with the utmost love, care, and attention it deserves. Thank you for being a part of the Miso family, and we can't wait to see you out there for another dusty year of enchanting soup-filled magic. With heartfelt love and endless umami, The Miso Crew
