For any of us, enduring the sudden death of a spouse or being diagnosed with a brain tumor would be unbearable. Yet, in just over a year, Michele has persevered through both these hardships while remaining grounded in compassion, grit, and hope. Regrettably, tragedy struck again on Sunday (7/30). While visiting her daughter, Madeline, in northern Wisconsin, she received a call from her neighbor informing her that her home of 25+ years was engulfed in flames. This was the home where Michele and her late husband, Paul, raised Madeline, cared for honey bees and their beloved cats, built a treehouse, cultivated a garden, and hosted dinners for family and friends. It was the house Michele came home to after long days of teaching American Sign Language at Madison’s LaFolette High School or interpreting throughout the Deaf community. In addition to losing her home, Michele has lost all belongings inside of her house - everything from family photos and memorabilia to clothing, furniture, kitchen items and countless antiques that Paul had collected over the years. Every loving memory of their life together was destroyed within hours by a devastating fire. Beyond feeling stunned and saddened, I want to take this opportunity to invite her community, and all those touched in some way by this profound devastation to show our support as she begins to rebuild and rise above this unthinkable life challenge and sorrow once again. Let’s show caring and kindness as this family has shown to all of us. Any contribution would be appreciated and go a long way towards alleviating the heart wrenching financial burdens that lie ahead. Let’s help Michele rise above this tremendous challenge to rebuild her life, acquire basic essentials all lost in the fire and have a comforting place to go after a long day.
