Dear all, I am sorry to share this devastating update with you about our wonderful friend, Mike Smith. At 5:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 17, in Lawncrest, Philadelphia, Mike's house caught fire while he slept. He escaped dramatically from the flames and smoke through the second story window and had to spend three days in Temple Hospital’s burn unit on a ventilator due to smoke inhalation. We are incredibly thankful that Mike escaped with his life and is recovering from the injuries. His house, which was his childhood family home, is likely a complete loss. As you know, Mike was a collector of all things amazing and cool - he supported his artist friends by buying their work, his beloved bands by attending their shows and buying merch and music, his favorite horror creators and his writer friends by attending cons supporting their creative community. Now, every single material possession from Mike's lifetime is now gone. This includes even basics like his phone, computer, car keys, glasses, wallet, essential identity documents, bed, toothbrush - literally everything. Even the few clothes he was wearing at the time had to be thrown away due to smoke damage. Mike is currently staying with his family and is not sure what his next steps will be. We are starting this LFEBridge for Mike to support him during this time. He will need to purchase again the basic essentials to resume daily life and continue working. He will also need to cover the medical bills from the hospital visit and follow-ups as he heals from the smoke inhalation. There will also be associated bills from the catastrophic damage to the house. Mike has been the most caring and committed friend and community member for decades, and any amount will help him recover from this catastrophe and provide him with some stability during this uncertain time. We will post updates on this page with how Mike is recovering and any additional news. Thank you so much for your generosity to our amazing friend.
