Two weeks ago, my cousin and his fiancé (and their little puppy Lily) lost their apartment and possessions when a fire started in the ground floor of their building in Alphabet City, lower Manhattan. The fire spread rapidly through the insulation and rendered the entire building uninhabitable for the forseeable future. They were already stretched thin financially and had fallen behind on their renter's insurance. The 3 are camping out on a single bed at a friend’s place, and are hoping to find a new place to live. They will have to replace everything from furniture and dishes to clothes and toiletries. Friends and family are helping, but it’s going to take a village. Mark & Fabian said the following: "We have already been overwhelmed with the support and kindness people have shown us since we lost our home. Fortunately, we have our health, a bed to sleep in and lots of our cherished personal possessions and family heirlooms survived relatively unscathed. When we find a new home, we will have to re-buy 90% of our furniture, kitchenware, appliances etc. But we both feel extremely lucky to have survived this together." So for those of you hoping to help, I am making this page (they are feeling overwhelmed and too shy to ask). Thank you for anything you send - I think even a lot of small amounts will add up, and will help them feel that people are out there caring - it might really help them through! If you want to send a message outside this app, you can email his Mom - message me personally for the details. Thanks everyone!
