Hello all, we are reaching out on the behalf of our sister, Marin White who has been dealt a devastating blow recently. On Saturday, July 8th 2024, Marin was out for a walk with a friend at a park not far from her Edmonton apartment. She was only gone for a short time but returned to find her apartment in flames and surrounded by fire trucks. In less than an hour everything she owned was gone. The firemen were able to get her cat, Chauncy out of the building and he was taken to the vet. Very sadly he passed away 3 days later due to his injuries. He was a part of the family and the loss is heartbreaking. Over the last week, Marin has been dealing with 3 different insurance companies, her landlord, and the building manager. She did have renter’s insurance for her personal belongings but a very minimal amount and the damage was extensive. She was allowed to enter the apartment after a couple of days with the hopes that she could salvage and save some of her belongings but was told she would have to wait until the insurance adjusters finished their inspection before she could remove anything. Unfortunately after the inspections were done it was discovered that the building had tested positive for asbestos and that everything in her apartment is now “contaminated” and classified as “hazardous waste”. This bad news means that there will be no saving of any of her belongings. She was also informed that due to the asbestos contamination, everything in her apartment has to be disposed of in accordance with “hazardous waste” protocols and done by a certified asbestos removal company. Not only does this cost have to come out of her renter’s insurance but the estimates for the service were between 30 and 35 thousand dollars. This exceeds her insurance policy total by a substantial amount which means that she will have to pay out-of-pocket for any cleanup costs that exceed the insurance amount and she will also be left with no coverage or funds to replace her belongings. This has been a devastating, complicated, and overwhelmingly sad situation for Marin - who most of you know to be one of the kindest, most hard-working, selfless people around. The financial strain and logistics are staggering for a family let alone a single person. We would like to offer the opportunity to extend support and love during this difficult time. Recognizing the weight of her loss and the complex challenges she faces, we have initiated this LFEBridge campaign. Our aim is twofold: to alleviate the burden of liability expenses she now bears and to provide her with help taking the steps towards rebuilding her life and replacing what has been lost, and covering the emergency vet bills she incurred. Thank you for your time and any help you can offer is most gratefully received.
