Hello my name is Andrew. Juneau is my 5 year old Border Collie/McNab mix. On Thursday 7/27 I noticed Juneau was struggling to pee, by the end of the day he was completely unable to pass any urine. We rushed him to the vet, they relieved his bladder with a catheter, did a few tests and sent us home with some antibiotics and pain medication. By the next night he was unable to pass any urine again and we brought him back to the emergency vet. When reinspected they felt a mass near his urethra. They did a BRAF test, but didn’t have the resources for any additional work at their location. We transferred him that same night to our only option available for the weekend, 5 hours away from home at Virginia Tech Veterinary Hospital. He remained there for a week for observation and diagnostics. The following Monday we were informed they found multiple tumors throughout his body (Intestine, liver, lymph and urethra) His urethra is almost completely blocked by one of these tumors, and our original hope to treat with surgery or radiation was now off the table. Tuesday they performed tests to determine which type of cancer he could have in hopes to give us some treatment options, but those tests came back inconclusive. His last option was to go in for a biopsy on Thursday. They opened his stomach to take samples from the tangerine sized mass in his ileum and remove what they could of the tumors in his intestines. His urethra mass was not able to be removed safely and his blood sugar levels crashed before they could consider putting in a stint to allow him to urinate. Before this, Juneau showed no symptoms of being sick. They said this is pretty unusual and seems to be pretty aggressive. They can’t confirm or deny his masses to be cancerous/malignant until the biopsy results come back sometime next week. It is possible that it could be something else, so they have also tested for bacterial, fungal and other infectious diseases. I want to do everything I can to bring Juneau home, I don’t want him to feel alone in this and I don’t want to give up on him. I can’t help but feel that he feels abandoned by us while in the hospital, he's a very sensitive guy. We have committed to pushing forward with any options he may have that would preserve his health while still maintaining a good quality of life. If you’ve ever met Juneau, you would know how incredibly sweet and gentle he is, how big of a lover he is and how he displays such emotional expression with everything he does. His total treatment may cost us up to $9,000 out of pocket after our pet insurance (Embrace) benefits, as they have an annual cap on how much they will reimburse. I am thankful to have pet insurance, but learning the hard way to avoid companies that put annual caps on their coverage. We would appreciate anything to help support him. Please wish him luck.
