My sister, Jemina Garay, was violently assaulted and almost killed on February 23rd, 2024. She intervened when her neighbor was being assaulted in a Domestic Violence incident, and her neighbor's assailant shot her in the head at close range. She survived due to quick lifesaving actions by her husband, a neighbor who is a retired military EMT, and the amazing doctors and nurses at Harlem Hospital in New York City. You can read more about what happened here: https://www.google.com/amp/s/news.yahoo.com/amphtml/news/suspect-shooting-harlem-woman-regularly-224000672.html (We have a companion Amazon wishlist if you prefer to donate goods -or would like to): https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/2IP1Z6AXT2RHJ?ref_=wl_share Despite what seems like insurmountable odds, Jemina is making a remarkable recovery. She still has a long way to go, but she fights daily and makes huge strides in her progress. Jemina was the primary breadwinner in the family. Her husband, Eric, has a disability that only allows for part-time work, and since the assault, he hasn't been able to work at all. He is the primary caregiver for the 4 youngest of the 6 children they share (2 are adults) and without a job, funds are almost non-existent. Eric stretched the savings they had until June of this year and has no other form of support. With school coming up, the fact that the family had to leave their home of almost 20 years - They had to leave most of their belongings behind- and an enormous amount of transition and trauma, we are asking for help in getting the kids (and Eric) some stability while they navigate their "new normal". We estimate the family’s base monthly expenses, without food or extras, to be about $1200 per month. Thankfully, my sister’s family has rent covered for now. These funds will be used for: Transportation ( MetroCards) / job search Utilities Household Supplies Personal Hygiene Products Laundromat cards School Uniforms/Clothes School Supplies Winter Clothes We are hoping to raise a few months' worth of expenses so that my brother-in-law, nieces, and nephew have one less thing to worry about. We want to help Eric and the kids find their footing after this tragedy, help Eric find a new job, and prepare the new apartment for my sister’s return once she’s recovered enough to leave the long-term care facility. Thank you for blessing our family with your help. Please continue to send my sister and her family love and positive energy.
