Hello, my name is Jahnay Butler; I’m 20 and currently pursuing my associate's degree in Human services, and in the future, I plan on transferring to Hunter's College's bachelor's program in social work. Although I am in school, my main priority is my siblings; steps I'm doing to come closer to my end goal of having my siblings is taking part in foster parent training to obtain my certification and prospectively adopt or kingap them. My siblings and I have been in foster care since I was 10. I have two sisters, Verlie (9) and Kalya (14), and two brothers, Prodigy (10) and Jahshawn (23). My mom started using drugs because my dad was, and she didn't want to judge him. Sadly, my dad passed away from an overdose during this time. My mom is still alive, but the drugs have prevented her from moving and speaking, so she resides in a nursing home. My siblings and I have faced a lot of trauma, including abuse, both in and out of foster care. Seeing my dad dead and my mom lost to drugs has significantly impacted us. The drugs changed her behavior, and they've also influenced how I talk, walk, think, and feel. Despite therapy, my trauma is a big part of who I am. It's disappointing that the system doesn't always take good care of children removed from their homes. For example, my sister Verlie was mistreated in her foster home, and my siblings Prodigy and Verlie (in the same foster home) are afraid to ask for food. My siblings are incredibly talented. Prodigy excels in school, Verlie is a great dancer, and my sister Kalya is a fantastic artist. They mean everything to me. I want to use any money I raise to get a suitable apartment where I can take care of them properly. This means providing a comfortable home and ensuring they have what they need, like furniture and clothes. Your help would mean the world to us.
