My name is Bill and I am a disabled U.S. Army veteran. Last week as I was returning home from helping another Army veteran who'd just had major surgery get settled back in his home, a very large pothole managed to break the right rear McPherson strut and bend the right upper control arm. I had no choice but to drive very slowly and carefully to get my car back home before the tire quite literally exploded. I live in a modest little cottage in a very heavily wooded area here in south central Arkansas. The nearest grocery store is nearly ten miles from here, and the local VA Clinic is around sixteen miles. The VA Hospital in Little Rock is fifty-six miles from me. Not having a drivable car is a major handicap. The scope of repairs will be a new McPherson strut, an upper control arm, a right rear brake line, a right rear ABS sensor and a new tire. The repair estimate is around $2500. I've very carefully structured my very modest Social Security + Supplemental Security Income + SNAP (food assistance) to make ends meet, but less than $1000/month doesn't leave much wiggle room for emergencies. All funds received will be used to fix my car, and the remaining balance (if any) will go into savings as an hedge against a possible future emergency.
