Hi, my name is Rev. Alison Young. I am the pastor of a small church in Central Vermont where devastating flooding has just occurred. The President has declared our area a Disaster area for FEMA purposes. This will help in the future but not soon enough for everyone involved. One of my parishioners, a Chaplain at a local Medical Center, saw her basement and property devastated by flood waters in the recent July 2024 storm in Barre, VT. Her home is not in a designated flood plane but was inundated with water, mud, gravel and debris from the hills above her which created a river through her property surrounding her house on both sides and pouring into her basement through her bulkhead. She had 30" in her basement which, through help of friends, was able to get pumped out but she now still has 2" of fetid muck in her basement that needs to be removed and the area disinfected to prevent mold. She has lost and will need to replace a freezer and a damaged hot water heater. Due to family (her elderly mother just fell and broke her elbow) and her own illness (serious bronchitis and pneumonia) immediately prior to the flood, she has no remaining paid leave time and is having to take unpaid leave from work while facing thousands of dollars of clean-up, repair and replacement costs. We hope you can help! Anyone who knows Laura would tell you that she would be there for you in a crisis at the drop of a hat. It is hard for us clergy to ask for help, but the seriousness of this situation calls out for just that. Thank you for any amount you can give to ease Laura's burden.
