Adult School Teachers United (ASTU) is a small, independent union representing about 85 adult school teachers in West Contra Costa County, California. We need your help to pay legal fees that protect our teachers’ rights. Since we were recognized as a union in 2017, we have been negotiating our first contract, but due to union-busting tactics by our school district that include the abrupt firing of the union's president and vice president and refusal to recognize the union's right to represent large numbers of its members, we still don't have a contract. In spring of 2024, our district declared impasse and we are currently in mediation. Community support has been the key to ASTU's survival; the union president and vice president were restored to their positions after community outcry. But ASTU has had to file five unfair labor practice charges against the West Contra Costa Unified School District for its union-busting tactics. In 2024, ASTU won an it's first Unfair Labor Practice claim, and the Public Employee Relations Board decision on the case is now precedent. You can read the decision here: http://www.bezemeklaw.com/s/PERB-Decision-SFCE3470E.pdf Decisions are pending on two other Unfair Labor Practice claims, and there will be hearings on two more in December and January. We run our union on a shoestring; we don't have an office and all of our officers are volunteers. Adult school teaching does not pay well, and our members are some of the lowest paid adult school teachers in the Bay Area. We need help paying our legal bills so we can keep fighting for the rights of our members. Like almost all adult school teachers in California, ASTU’s members are low-paid, hourly part time workers with no health insurance. A contract would mean a lot to these teachers, who have been struggling to get by. Adult school teachers do an important job for our community, offering adult students a second chance for a high school diploma, valuable job training, and English instruction for our large immigrant population. They need and deserve union protection, a fair deal, and respect. Please help us by donating to our legal fund so that we can enforce California’s laws which protect workers and labor unions. Every victory, however small, makes labor stronger. We are fighting for ourselves, but also for you. Thank you for your support.
