More than 275 youth and adults were ordered to shelter in place at Mt. Norris Scout Reservation when devastating flooding struck on July 10 – the first full day of our 2024 Resident Camp Season. Camp Staff initiated our Emergency Action Plan and relocated Cub Scouts from low-lying sites to higher ground as the surge jumped the banks of Lake Eden swamping the only access road from the property. Daybreak revealed everyone to be safe and while modified programming resumed on Tuesday, more than 2 dozen Scouts and Leaders attending from hard-hit areas like Barre and Montpelier began to face the prospect of returning home to uncertainty and destruction. It's still too early to know how this historic flooding will impact members of Vermont's Scouting Community especially as the rain continues to fall. Green Mountain Council has been moved by the number of people who've reached out to express support and a desire to help. Thank you. If you are in a position to help us assist Vermont's Scouting Families who have been impacted by this tragedy, please consider making a gift. We remain hopeful to provide unrestricted grants of $1,000 to 25 Scouting Families who need some help getting back on the trail. Should we exceed this goal, excess funds will be utilized to support recovery and shovel-ready stormwater management projects at Mt. Norris Scout Reservation that will help us harden the site against future flood events that have become increasingly frequent over the past 50 years. Thank you for making a difference and please consider visiting us during our Winter Trek Program or adding Mt. Norris Scout Reservation to your unit's camp rotation. Local communities and small businesses appreciate your patronage in the long road ahead. 2024 Resident Camp Information and Reservations can be made now.
