Hi, I'm Peter owner of Corfu Tourist who on the 23rd of July was notified of a fire that had started on the beautiful island of Corfu, which over the next few days and nights turned into an emergency situation. The team and I decided to report this straight away to everyone on the island, as factually as we could, while being sensitive to the issue at hand. The effect on the island could have been devastating if it was not for the bravery of the men and women from the emergency services here on Corfu, along with the support from mainland Greece, the Bulgarian fire service, and the helicopter and water plane crews. Key to this fire being stopped was the unseen heroes from all around the island that risked their lives to fight the fire over a number of days. However, the most poignant was on Tuesday night when they battled the fire threatening the village of Old Perithia along with the surrounding mountain range. We have received many messages and emails from people asking how they can help. Setting this fundraiser up will help to support a number of communities including the many animal welfare charity organisations that have been overrun with animals dropped at their doors or collected from the affected areas.
