Thank you for checking in to see how you can help. I am usually on the other side helping in a role of a mentor, friend, daughter, colleague and neighbor. Neighbor - this means so much more to me now. On July 28, Friday night at around 11:45 pm I heard a loud boom and saw a bright light just outside my window. About 10 minutes later the building fire alarms were set off by my 4th floor neighbor across the hall. I later learned she saw flames on her balcony right after the lightning struck a transformer on the roof. At about midnight, another neighbor was running down the hall banging on doors and yelling "Get out there's fire on the roof!" Panic set in and I started shaking. I don't remember putting my shoes on or how I was able to get our family cat, Bhalam, into the carrier or how I got out of the building. About 300 other residents flooded the street along with 8 emergency vehicles. I captured the attached photo of the billowing fire and smokestack that was right over my apartment. I felt sick with dread knowing that it might have been the last time I saw my grandfather's railroad choo-choo train model he received at his BN retirement. On the morning of Saturday, July 29th the fire marshall confirmed that the roof collapsed, the floors collapsed and that the structural integrity is likely gone. The floors dropped from 4th to 3rd to 1st. About 170 residents were displaced. Some of them are nurses and physicians. I am blessed to be alive. I am grateful to be surrounded by many who care for me and are with me for support during my rebuilding journey. I am looking for a new home. Your donation will help me with immediate items: a bed, an office desk, an office chair, plates, utensils, a small sofa, Bhalam's prescription food, and a handful of professional work blouses, pants and shoes. I promise to pay it forward every chance I get. A heartfelt thank you. https://wgntv.com/news/lightning-strike-believed-to-be-start-of-apartment-fire-in-oakbrook-terrace/ https://abc7chicago.com/oakbrook-terrace-fire-arden-of-lightning-strike-apartment-complex/13568586/ https://www.cbsnews.com/chicago/news/apartment-fire-oakbrook-terrace/
