My name is Matthew Riesenman and I am a Life Scout in Troop 159 in Hewitt, NJ. For my Eagle Scout project, I am installing twenty-five "bat houses" around Beaver Lake in Franklin, NJ. These bat houses will provide safe shelter for native bats in the area. Bats are important for a healthy environment. The presence of a healthy bat population is a main indicator of a healthy environment. They control insect populations, aid in pollination, and seed dispersal. Each bat can eat 1,500 to 3,000 insects each night in just a few hours, including cucumber beetles, leaf hoppers, mosquitoes, termites, ants, roaches, earworms, and grasshoppers. Around Beaver Lake we find many types of bats including: Little brown bat Big brown bat Northern long-eared bat Indiana bat (a federal and state endangered species) Eastern small-footed bat and Eastern pipistrelle. Hoary Bat, Red Bat, and Silver Haired Bat migrate to NJ in summers. My goal is to build enough bat houses to attract and protect 500 to 1,000 bats in the area. I intend to purchase and install high-quality bat houses like the ones shown below: My goal for the project is to raise at leat $1,500 to purchase the bat houses and other materials. Once I have all of the necessary materials, my Troop and other friends will install the bat houses around the lake. We hope to have everything done by the end of the summer. ABOUT ME I have been a Scout since the first grade. I am currently a Junior Assistant Scout Master in my Troop as well as a staff member on the NNJBSA National Youth Leadership Training program. I am also a Brotherhood member of Order of the Arrow Lodge Lenapehoking IX where I serve as part of the ceremonies team. I've taken part in many highi adventure trips such as canoing 50 miles in the Adirondacks, spending a week on an island off the Florida Keys, and many other trips. I am a lifelong "Beaver Laker" where my family owns a home. I am looking forward to using my Scouting skills and love of Beaver Lake to help support the environment and preserve its natural beauty. THANKS YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
