Hi, my name is Anna. For my birthday in August this year, I'm asking for donations to be made for the benefit of a Ugandan family in crisis due to a medical emergency. A couple of Sundays ago I met 25-year-old Peninah from Kampala, Uganda after Sunday church service. Here is her story: - Peninah comes from a family of 5 and left a 2-year-old son in Kampala, Uganda’s capital which is covered in hardship. - She struggled to support her son and family as there is a lot of poverty in the city and many people die of hunger. She came to Canada in May 2024 as a refugee just recently in hopes to find work and help her family. - She could not finish her studies as a nurse in Uganda because she did not have enough money to pay for tuition; however, she worked in a hospital helping deliver babies, helping surgeons in surgery rooms and caring for people with AIDS. Peninah saw a lot of people die because they had no money to pay for medications and care; without help, one can bleed to death there in her own words. - Since arriving in Toronto, she lives in a shelter and receives less than $343 per month in government assistance. She is eager to study and work in Canada to build a better life. Only a couple of months here, she is already volunteering at Toronto People With AIDS Foundation (https://www.pwatoronto.org) because she says that it’s her goal to use her hands to help others. - On Thursday August 3rd a tragedy happened in her own family as Peninah’s 15 year-old brother Mugenyi Frank (photo) was in a car accident. He is unconscious in a coma and requires immediate medical care. He spent two days in a government-funded hospital where doctors did not do anything to help him. On August 5th Peninah has sent home all of her monthly $343 government assistance money to move him to a private hospital (leaving nothing for herself!), where he is now. The doctors say he has blood clots in the brain and in the lungs because of the accident, as well as broken bones. It is estimated that he will need medical care for a least two months. - Peninah left her family behind and came to Canada because of the dire financial need, but now this is even more tragic situation as it is a matter of life and death for this 15-year-old. I invite you to consider donating what you can for the benefit of Peninah’s family instead of buying a birthday gift for me. All funds raised will be provided to Peninah's family.
