While coaching advanced riding school at BIR on June 6th, Brett was involved in a crash where another rider had crashed in front of him, this other motorcycle went flipping through the air eventually taking out Brett. From that impact injuries sustained include multiple rib fractures, collapsed lung, a broken collar bone, and a broken shoulder blade. Transported via ambulance from the track to Brainerd Hospital, where they stabilized and put in chest tubes, then transported via ambulance to St Cloud Hospital. Once admitted consultation with the Trauma surgeon and orthopedic surgeon, concluded that the collarbone and ribs both would need surgery. The first surgery was on 6/7 for the rib plating, then on 6/8 for the collarbone. After those surgeries released home on 6/9, only to have complications of fluid build up in the chest cavity trying to collapse the left lung again. Thus going back in on Sunday 6/11. A third chest drain was installed and was in the hospital for a couple more days. After all of that, there were 2 post-op check-ups, 1 with ortho was fine but after seeing x-rays and discussing at the post-op with the Trauma surgeon the posterior ribs that were broken had become more displaced enough to cause the need for a third surgery on 7/14 to fix 2 or 3posterior ribs. As you can imagine even with insurance the out-of-pocket expenses and other treatment costs are going to be piling up pretty quickly. While he doesn't like to ask for help, these expenses will put them in a pretty tough financial position. All funds will be used to help offset any out-of-pocket or non-covered medical expenses. The prognosis is for a full recovery and while it will be a bit, getting back on the bike and continuing to coach, ride and Race is the goal. Lets help get this medical stuff taken care of and let Brett worry about healing up and recovering!
