Fantastic Progress! Per Leo's weekly checkups in San Diego his progress is amazing. Together we celebrate this miracle. We also join to see - if together - we can help ease the weight of the additional expenses of this journey. Please Join us and Donate whatever you can. Thank you to everybody who has already joined up to assist!! The path that got them here: Guero’s single kidney (since birth) had a limited lifespan. But a few years back time seemed to accelerate as his numbers and symptoms indicated kidney failure. A permanent catheter was inserted to prep him for dialysis, which began nine months ago producing mixed health results and radically changing both Guero’s and Roberto's lives. On July 5, they got the call - completely unexpected! Roberto dropped everything to drive Guero immediately to San Diego for the surgery. The surgery lasted four hours, but Guero came through with strong vitals (he’s a fighter). During the surgery, Roberto found a place that they could lease for a month as multiple and extensive check-ups required them to live locally for at least four weeks. During tourist season, this in itself was amazing. Just today the doctors confirmed that all is progressing well, and the kidney is “awake.” There is still intense pain, but it will get better. The pressing issue is finances. With Roberto not working for a month being the assigned caretaker, there is little money coming in. Meanwhile the expenses of the lease in San Diego plus their usual expenses are a bit overwhelming when combined with their medical expenses not covered by insurance are significant. We agree that when a life can be saved, money (or the lack thereof) should never be a consideration. However, it is a reality. So please donate a bit - or a lot - to help out. Thanks so much. Every bit helps so please do what you can. Dialysis made working impossible and no unemployment was available as Guero is considered an independent contractor as a barber. Disability was not an immediate option, so finances added significant stress. The search for a kidney donation intensified. Due to Guero’s special circumstances finding a hospital willing to perform the transplant became a challenge. But progress was being made and coming together - the relief was tangible. But in a few months, plans and hopes began to unravel. The site in Boston willing to work with them changed policies and potential donors became unavailable via an incomplete match or having to back out. It was especially difficult to deal with the disappointment after everything was going so well. The growth they both worked so for during the previous years, along with the support from friends and mentors, empowered them to hold onto hope and believe that their Higher Power had a good plan for them. As the waiting continued while nothing changed, they held onto a recovery program slogan: “Don’t leave until the miracle happens.” Then things started happening in such a way that they sensed that the miracle had begun – Guero was accepted into a medical research program in San Diego. So much better than Boston; something relatively local with access to friends and support, with a friendly and involved staff and with the promise of a transplant sooner than later. Wow!
