Hello! My name is Jenna and I am setting up a fundraiser for my best friend of 27 years, Katie, her husband Fernando, and their daughter Cienna. Fernando was in a very serious car accident on August 1st and was airlifted to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He underwent a surgery for a broken femur to temporarily stabilize his leg and will have another surgery tomorrow to repair it. He also has some internal bleeding on his liver and spleen that doctors are watching very carefully. He is currently in the ICU but stable. Fern will be out of work for quite some time and has a long road to recovery. Katie also works full time and will have to take time off as well. This fundraiser is to help them get through this time of financial uncertainty so they can focus on Fern’s recovery. I will update more as things progress! Update 8/3: The surgery on Fern’s femur went well this morning. He had a few post op complications that resulted in needing a blood transfusion (high blood pressure and low hemoglobin) but he is stable and resting now. They will meet with the orthopedic doctor tomorrow for next steps. Update 8/4: Fern was able to eat a bit of solid food today. He also took a few steps with some help. Good news! Update 8/6: Fern has started physical therapy in the hospital. He took a few steps over the weekend! His release date will depend on how PT goes. Katie wants to thank everyone so very much for your support emotionally and financially. She is so grateful for all the people that love and care about them. Because of you, they can breathe a little easier while Fern recovers. Update 8/7: Fern was discharged on Sunday evening! They are all headed home. He will have a follow up appointment at Mayo in 2 weeks and receive care at home. Katie will need to stay home to care for him for the next 6 weeks.
