Dear friends and family, I am reaching out to bring you up to date on Teal, as she is facing a health crisis. Teal has been diagnosed with several forms of Dysautonomia, as well as a heart condition. These are rare, multi-system diseases that have caused significant complications, particularly related to her heart rate and blood pressure. Teal’s symptoms make her feel weak, lightheaded, and fatigued. She has lost significant weight, has frequent blackouts, and cannot stand up for very long. Moreover, because her health has been so fragile, Teal has been extremely cautious about making sure she doesn’t pick up COVID or other viruses, which has further isolated her. Due to her health problems, Teal has been unable to continue her studies at the University of Arizona where she was close to completing her fourth year in their BFA program for Business Leadership. The online classes that were once accessible and convenient for Teal to pursue have now become too overwhelming for her to manage. Additionally, Teal's career in dance, which has always been her life passion, has also been put on hold. Thus, Teal is no longer able to teach her dance classes or participate in performances with her beloved dance company. This loss has been especially devastating for Teal since dance has always been her key source of joy, fulfillment, and connection with others. During this challenging time, Teal has been feeling increasingly hopeless and alone. Her fears have been magnified by the reality that few physicians understand her conditions and those who do are in short supply. Most doctors who treat these diseases have waiting lists of 2-3 years. Fortunately, we have been advised by Teal’s local medical team at UCLA Health to seek the expertise of a sub-specialist located in Denver, whom we believe can provide Teal with an appropriate treatment plan. This doctor had a cancellation for later this summer, which she offered to Teal and we accepted. We’re thrilled to have this appointment but our insurance does not cover out-of-state medical expenses so all appointments will be out of pocket. In addition to the cost of initial consultations and travel to Denver, we also anticipate needing funds to support ongoing medical treatments and therapies. I am writing to you today to humbly ask you to consider contributing to the cost of Teal’s medical care. Any amount you can contribute would be greatly appreciated. I have included information below on how you can donate as well as a breakdown of costs. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter and for considering our request. Any financial and emotional support you can provide to Teal will be greatly appreciated and even a call or text will make an impact and help her feel like she is not alone and that people care. Breakdown of costs: Consultation- $3000 Second visit- $1500 Followup visits- $700/hr Travel expenses- $1000 Missed income from work- $500 Ongoing physical therapy/occupational therapy sessions back at home- $575/month Donation information: Venmo: @tealdrake If you prefer to donate via check, please reach out and I can send you our address. With love and gratitude, Carla
