Hi! This September 26th, I am taking part in a very special relay that will involve 2 teams of 6 swimming simultaneously across the 21-mile Catalina Channel. This swim route is considered part of the Triple Crown of Open Water Marathon Swimming, and it is all the more special because our teams will be comprised of at least 6 individuals actively in Recovery from Substance Use Disorder, several more who have been directly affected by loved ones who suffered from SUD and several others of us who support their cause enthusiastically. The iSwim4 Foundation was founded by one of these swimmers, and their mission is to not only "Shine a Light on What's Possible in Recovery," but they have also taken a very unique and proactive role in Recovery advocacy: iSwim4 has established services which help provide access to aquatic facilities, events, coaching, safety supervision and swim gear for individuals in Recovery. The premise is that individuals who maintain their physical well-being also enhance their mental well-being and are thus more likely to succeed in long-term sobriety - particularly through the therapeutic benefits of swimming. To date, they have established community swim programs in the Mid-Atlantic and Southern California for individuals in the Recovery Community. This includes pools, open water venues, safety personnel and coaching to benefit the community. Some of the swimmers in our group have gone on not only to raise money and advocate for Recovery charities, but have also raised thousands for other important social causes such as animal welfare, clean oceans, special needs, cancer research and more. This swim is deeply meaningful to me. It takes so much courage to commit to sobriety and anyone who manages to free themselves from the grasp of addiction is an absolute hero. So much beauty and potential are unleashed in sobriety and second chances are worth supporting! Even $1 will make an impact. Funds raised will go directly to those in recovery, as well as to Al-Anon of San Diego.
