Two years ago, my life was turned upside down by an accident at work. I fell two flights off a scaffolding, broke 4 ribs, and fractured my collarbone. After half a day in the hospital, where they took x-rays and examined me, I was cleared to go home and told to rest until I healed. What no one told me was that I hadn’t just bruised my collarbone but in fact had fractured it. They sent me home without stabilizing it or treating it as a fracture. After two weeks of excruciating pain (I couldn’t even tolerate the pressure of the water when I showered), I went back to my doctor who discovered that my collarbone was broken. By the time the errors were acknowledged, my collarbone had started to heal out of place (see photo). The doctors who made the mistake, refused to give me a much-needed surgery to correct the problem claiming that if the bone didn’t puncture the skin, they wouldn’t operate. As a result, I am currently walking around with indescribable pain. I’ve been through over a year of physical therapy and endless medical appointments, been unable to work and provide for my family. There are days I struggle to do basic daily functions because of the pain. This injury has cost me my job and my quality of life. I went from being a successful independent contractor to having to worry about day-to-day expenses. I can't get back to normal work in construction/contracting and my contract was terminated earlier this year. I have applied for over 40 jobs only to be rejected or declined and the truth is, in my current state, I am limited in how much heavy work I can do because of the pain. Some days are fine and other days I can barely get out of the car from pain. I have a legal case against the hospital that has been tied up for over a year and in the meantime, I continue to have expenses. I have 2 young children and I am fighting to make the ends meet every month. My goal has always been to get back to work, whatever it takes. I have always taken pride in my work. I am a man who loved his job and wants to be able to return to work. The past two years have taken a toll on me. Not a day goes by without me thinking, “What have I done to deserve this situation?” It has broken me down. As difficult as this is for me, I’m reaching out to ask for your help to get me back on my feet. The public health system in Norway has refused my petitions to do a surgery to rebreak and reset my collarbone. They tell me I can get the surgery through the private system. This would require I pay for the surgery out of pocket, which due to 2 years of unemployment, I can’t afford to do right now. I feel great shame having to ask other people to help me because I have always prided myself in being independent and self-reliant and in the past, I was the one who was known for helping others in need. It feels heavy to have to be on the other side of asking for support. So, it’s with much humility that I am asking my friends and community to help me get back to the man I was two years ago. The amount I’m trying to raise would cover the costs of my surgeries (one to break and reset with metal plate and the second to remove the metal plate when it’s healed) and living expenses for the recovery period. If/when the goal is reached, any funds left from the raiser will be donated to a charity that helps families/people in need.
