Our dear friends, the Ferlet Family, are experiencing an unexpected and extremely stressful medical situation. Sheila's routine mammogram in May revealed an abnormality that necessitated a biopsy and in June, she received a diagnosis of breast cancer. The treatment plan calls for a bilateral mastectomy, which is scheduled for August 14th. The bilateral mastectomy is an intense procedure that will require a lengthy healing period. Sheila will be largely immobilized during the first few weeks following the procedure and she'll lose strength and range of motion in her arms during that time. Once she has recovered enough to move her arms, she will need to undergo months of physical therapy to regain the strength and range of motion lost while she was immobilized. This has been, and for the foreseeable future will continue to be, a difficult time for the family, particularly for the children, who are aware of their mama’s condition and understand that this next year will look different than expected. The family is doing their best to adjust to the challenges this health calamity presents while still maintaining some sense of normalcy. The Ferlets are grateful to have a wonderful support system of people who are reaching out and asking for ways that they can help. At this time, the family is facing large medical expenses (despite having health insurance), childcare expenses, household assistance expenses, and incidental expenses related to the treatment process & healing period. In the 10+ years I have known Sheila she has always been a steadfast and true friend and I'm sure that many of you reading this post feel the same way. I have coordinated this LFEBridge as a way for friends and loved ones to support Sheila and the Ferlet family by alleviating some of their financial burdens. Together, we can ease some of the stress on the Ferlet family and help Sheila on her path to recovery!
