My name is Paula. I have started this fundraiser in support of Chris & Kate Young, dear friends of mine and also friends to many others. Chris and Kate have been courageously living with the life-altering challenges of ALS for a few years now. On a recent visit, Chris shared that he had been able to get outdoors for a bit and how much he had enjoyed it. The manual wheelchair is only of use when another person can assist him, as Chris no longer has the strength to move himself unaided. An electric wheelchair would afford Chris a greater degree of mobility and would afford Kate a break from her very much in-demand muscle power...this would be a win-win!! Although the ALS Society of Canada has been able to provide support, electric wheelchairs are hard come by and Chris is currently on an idefinite wait list. ALS is an unpredictable, brutal disease. I do not doubt that everyone will agree that it will be wonderful for Chris to have use of an electric wheelchair as soon as possible. The electric wheelchair will be donated to the ALS Society of Canada when Chris is no longer using it. Any funds raised in excess of the cost of the wheelchair will also go to Chris & Kate for other items that are helpful to them or any additonal expenses incurred while they navigate this journey.
