Mental health services, especially quality ones, are hard to come by. And they are even harder to come by in Iowa. Moms do anything and everything they can for their kids but it often comes at a price. And in Kathleen's case, it's a hefty one. Elly's story is long and complicated. It's filled with tragedy, setbacks, and loss. But her history isn't as important as her future. Elly's family has tried every local resource and used every insured option available. When Elly is home she cannot be left alone, meaning Kathleen misses work to stay home and keep her daughter safe even when it means going without pay. Elly is finally on the right track to healing but it has taken numerous in- and out-patient programs and is on-going. Elly has recently been treated in several states and has required transport numerous times. Her mom has been determined to be by her side every step of the way. While the cost of travel, lodging and food piles up, there is the huge concern of treatment, which is not covered by insurance. Elly is now on an encouraging path thanks to the persistence of her care team. But this is an on-going battle that is far from over. To date, the family has spent well over $250,000 to not only get this young lady the help she desperately needs but that she will continue to need on an on-going basis to lead the full and productive life she was meant to have.
