A little more than a year ago, I felt called to take a gap year before continuing onto college. As the first few years of navigating life as a young adult are quite formative, I was advised to take some time to develop a strong foundation. After some research, I am excited to share that I am spreading my wings to attend YWAM in Hong Kong! This specific organization resonated with me, and I hope I can share some things about it that may touch you as well. YWAM, which stands for Youth with A Mission, is a Christian organization that aims to mentor young people to know God and make God known among the nations. The specific one I am joining is located in Chai Wan, Hong Kong. I will be part of a program called DTS (Discipleship Training School) which will run from September to February. The first twelve weeks will be dedicated to intense discipleship and lectures. For example, I’ll go through classes about following Jesus in my daily life, God’s character, how we are called to treat others, the field of missions, etc. This DTS also has an emphasis in worship, whether that’s through learning how to produce music or busking on Hong Kong Streets. Some of you may know that I really love music, and this is one of the reasons why I felt called to this program. After that, my group and I will be embarking in an outreach in another country. The specific country of outreach is yet to be determined but previous examples have included Cambodia and Thailand. This will be a time of serving others, learning about other cultures and seeing what God is doing in other nations. Now that’s a lot of things! This is where you may take a part in my journey. Secondly, I am in need of approximately $8,000. This will cover fees for airline flights, food, housing, school fees, training camps and outreach. However, 1 Timothy 4:12-13 reads, “Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.” Although some parts of the world are definitely messed up, it is also an opportunity for God to demonstrate his light through believers all over the globe.
