Dear Ohana: family and friends near and far, “You never know what life is going to give you.” (This is the hardest summary to write) Gary and I come from a little island in Hawaii called Oahu. My husband is a beach babe who loves the ocean. One day, he asked if I wanted to move to Washington to be closer to his family. I told him that it was up to him and that I’ll be okay moving away from home. We took a leap of faith and made the move. Then we had a dream to own a home. It took a couple of years until finally, in 2019, the dream became a reality. However, that was the same year that a health issue was not on our side. I, Carol, was diagnosed with kidney failure. I chose to do peritoneal dialysis. Then just recently, another health issue arose, except this time it is about my love, Gary Felix. I am reaching out to you all on behalf of my other half, Gary, who has been recently diagnosed with stage 4 cancer of the colon, the spine (bone), and the lung. He has decided to fight this aggressive disease with the help of his oncologist, who recommended that he has radiation, chemo, physical therapy, and immunotherapy. In his case, surgery is not an option. Gary is unable to walk and work at his full-time job since his cancer is pressing on a nerve that makes his legs weak, but with physical therapy, we hope his legs will get better. I am still employed part-time but would rather be by Gary’s side during his difficult battle with cancer. However, my babe is worried about how we will pay for our household bills and medical expenses. Over the next days, weeks, and months ahead we will need to be at countless doctor appointments and hospital stays. As you can imagine the medical costs can be astronomical on top of the everyday living expenses; such as mortgage, food, gas, etc. Gary is very determined to win this fight for both of us, so any help provided (no matter the amount) is greatly appreciated.
