On Sunday, July 30th, a call was made that no parent or significant other wanted to get. Drew called his girlfriend, Ashlen, at 10:40 and said that he and their roommate had been involved in a head-on collision while they were headed home from work. Ashlen rushed from their apartment to the accident scene. The boys had both been badly injured. Drew was the passenger and could crawl out from the wreckage while his roommate remained in the truck with his feet and legs pinned behind the wheel. The fantastic fire rescue and EMS crews from Monroe County and Ocean Reef were critical in keeping them calm, and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department and FHP did a fantastic job informing their loved ones about what was happening. The officers informed Ashlen that both boys would be okay, however; they needed to be airlifted to Jackson South Medical Center due to the extent of the trauma. They were airlifted out of Ocean Reef and brought to the hospital, where doctors examined them. Both had significant injuries. Drew had a large gash on his head that took six staples to seal and a broken collarbone. Later that night, Drew was transferred to a hospital bed and was on close watch. At 6:30 am on Monday, Drew woke up dry heaving. Doctors and nurses fled into his room and declared they would do an emergency abdominal surgery since they thought there could be damage to some part of his intestines. At 8:15 am, Drew was in the operating room, and after two hours of operation, Ashlen and Suzi (his mom) met with the surgeon, and he informed them that Drew was okay and that they found damage to his Sigmoid Colon. They removed a 4–5-inch section of his colon and reattached the healthy tissue. Drew has a long road to recovery. Today, August 6th, Drew remains in Jackson South Medical Center. His wound was recently covered with a machine called a wound vac, which will help it to heal. Once he is discharged, he will require a nurse to come and clean his abdominal incision every few days until it finally closes. Drew currently works at the Airport at Ocean Reef, Pirates Cove Dive Center, and in the winter, he bartends at the Racquet Club at Ocean Reef. He is an extremely hard worker and always brightens a room with his energy and love of life. The funds will help cover his mounting medical bills and living expenses. With no health insurance, the cost of the week-long hospital stay and surgeries will reach a number that I cannot even attempt to guess. Drew, his family, and friends are thankful for everyone who has reached out to check on them and sent well wishes. Knowing they aren't alone has made this difficult time a little easier.
