I'm writing to tell you about my sweet, handsome, athletic, smart, caring 16 yo nephew Hunter Schafmayer. Hunter is a straight A student, made All- State football team this year, loves animals (has his own chickens that he takes care of), and is a loving brother to his 4 siblings. This past Sunday he woke with a sudden, severe headache and sore neck. He has a history of Migraines, but was taken to the hospital anyway by his mom because of the severity of his pain. He was checked and sent home with instructions 'if it gets worse, bring him back', tests are normal. Monday midday, he woke with numbness in his legs, severe pain and weakness when walking, so back to the hospital he went. Within 12 hours, he was completely paralyzed from the neck down, and was placed on life support. A team of doctors in the Children's Hospital in Connecticut where he lives, jumped to work, to try and quickly diagnose what was happening. He had a dialysis catheter, a central line and urinary catheter placed within 2 hours of intubation. Doctors sent over 40 vials of blood to the national laboratory to try and get answers. They are currently treating him, until they can get answers, for sudden onset atypical Guillain-Barre syndrome, as symptoms are consistent somewhat with that Dx. He is undergoing plasmapheresis and IVIG txs daily, in addition to MRIs, lumbar punctures, and nerve simulation tests, in hopes of determining a Dx and cure and to stabalize him medically. I ask for your prayers, above all else, that this child will make a full recovery. If he does, it will be months at the earliest, that he will come out of ICU and go through therapy. The medical bills will be astronomical. If you are able to provide any financial donation, i am putting together this Go- Fund- Me on behalf of him and his family for that reason. Thank you for taking the time to read our story, and God bless.
