Marshall and Erin Sheffer’s son Logan (8) was recently hospitalized at Lurie Children’s Hospital. After being rushed to the ER straight from his pediatrician’s office, Logan was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Logan’s body was in DKA which means his blood had become acidic due to the high blood glucose levels. DKA is extremely painful, exhausting, and life threatening. Upon admittance to the hospital, logan was just 44 lbs. Over the course of the week, the amazing team at Lurie trained Marshall and Erin at Logan’s bedside to provide the care logan would need at home. Logan is now home but the family still needs support. Logan’s requires injections every three hours and his care currently requires a lot of time and energy to manage. His drastically rising and falling blood glucose levels leave him exhausted and in pain (among other things). Logan’s levels still drop critically low frequently enough that someone needs to be watching them 24/7 to keep him from going into a coma, having a seizure, experience brain damage, or death. Marshall and Erin have been doing shifts of 4 hours of sleep to keep Logan safe. While the family will learn to adjust to type 1 diabetes over the coming months, the disease is not curable. Logan’s body attacked his pancreas, killing off the insulin making cells (autoimmune disorder). Logan will rely on insulin for the rest of his life. Logan is a typical 8 year old boy and is eager to get back to feeling well enough to play consistently. The family is working closely with the T1D team at Lurie to increase the periods of time he is feeling well enough to do normal kid things. If you see Logan playing outside or out and about…it means he is having a good period of time with his levels and the hard work is paying off! The funds raised in this LFEBridge will help pay for the ongoing medical care Logan will need, purchasing a used iPhone to be used as a medical device to monitor his blood glucose via a CBM, additional help as needed, and for Erin take a little time off from work to adjust as a family and heal from the trauma of the past 3 weeks. Thank you all for your kindness and support!
