My name is Katie Millard and I’m fundraising for my son. My son is a 37-year-old active-duty soldier in the U.S. Army. Currently, he is serving as Sergeant First Class for the 79th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, in the California National Guard, San Diego, CA. SFC Deal needs your help. At the age of 18, SFC Deal enlisted from his home state of Iowa with the 34th Infantry Division, Red Bull, in the Iowa National Guard. Soon after basic training, SFC Deal served in 2006-2007 in Iraq with the longest serving brigade (with 18 months in country and a total of 22 months) due to a troop surge ordered by then-acting President Bush. Years later this service resulted in buried trauma that disrupted SFC Deal’s mental well-being so much as to cause serious health issues for the last several years. Recently SFC Deal received ICU treatment resulting in a 3-week stay at Balboa Hospital in San Diego. Although medically stable enough for release, he has significant long-term damage to internal organs including some cognitive deficits. He is now in his own home being cared for by his family with the help of Elizabeth Hospice of San Diego. During SFC Deal’s recent stay at Balboa Hospital, his phone was accidentally thrown away by hospital staff and was never recovered. Upon returning home SFC Deal was attempting to reconnect services and recall passwords on the new phone he had to purchase when further troubles unfolded. Sadly, due to his slowly recovering cognizant brain, he became a victim of a fraudulent website and some very savvy fraudsters. This resulted in SFC Deal losing thousands of dollars from his account. We are looking for funds to support SFC Deal’s two children as well as some specific personal needs such as funding to support an organic whole foods nutrition plan, travel for his family to move him back to Iowa once he can medically retire from the military and is able to make such a trip, replacement funds for the new phone and the money stolen from him by the fraudsters. We want to acknowledge Col. Tony Blain for rallying the troops in his local community to provide toys, and funds to help buy school clothes and supplies for his children with lightening fast speed. This helped to create a fun diversion for the kids while keeping the hospital and SFC Deal’s illness from being scary and providing a happier association for them.
