Many of you have likely noticed Scott has been missing from baseball games & tournament play, & currently not present at football conditioning/practices for the 3 younger boys. The boys finished their baseball seasons without their Dad (bonus), there to cheer them on. Watching Sheldon, Deklyn, Brodi, & Brantli play is his priority & brings him joy! On June 9th , Scott went to Urgent Care seeking treatment for a terrible sore throat, bleeding gums, achy muscles/joints, & extreme exhaustion. The Dr reviewed his symptoms & prescribed antibiotics. Scott took the medication as directed but didn’t feel he was getting any better. At Raechel’s insistence he made an appointment with a new family doctor on 6/19 for a complete physical exam and full bloodwork. The following day, 6/20, Scott & Sheldon were in Olathe for Sheldon’s first ever Coaches Showcase for baseball when Scott received the call from the doctor’s office telling him to get to the nearest emergency room immediately. His blood count was extremely abnormal & he needed to be seen right away. Scott held out as long as he could for Sheldon’s sake, but he started feeling so bad, they packed up & headed to St Luke’s Hospital in Lee’s Summit. After waiting several hours, Scott was finally taken to an exam room. There he continued to wait as the Drs did their initial exam & ordered lab work. Unfortunately, the results from the bloodwork from the Dr’s office was never received so new blood draws had to be done & they had to wait for the results. Finally, the Drs delivered the devastating news, they were 95% sure Scott had leukemia. A blood transfusion was started & he was transported by ambulance at midnight to St Luke’s on the Plaza because Lee’s Summit was able to provide him with the care necessary for his dire condition. He spent most of the next day in the Emergency Room at the Plaza location before a room was available. They were finally able to confirm the diagnosis of leukemia & started treating him with additional blood transfusions, arsenic, chemo, & antibiotics, along with multiple scans, x-rays, lumbar puncture, & bone marrow biopsy. It has been a whirlwind of activity, physical restrictions, sleepless nights, & a rollercoaster ride of emotions, as well as the hardship of being isolated away from his always on the move family. Scott has now been in that hospital room for over 1 month! He spent his 41st birthday at the hospital. He also had to miss the small family get together celebrating Sheldon & Brantli’s birthdays. Every time it looks like he is closer to getting out, something else comes up. They will face more challenges once he is released from the hospital as he will have numerous appointments to continue the chemo treatments & follow-up visits which will prevent him from returning to work for quite some time. We are praying the treatment is successful & he will continue to get stronger & healthier & eventually go into remission. They need your help! Thankfully, Raechel is not due to go back to the classroom until late August so she can spend as much time as possible between the hospital and home. Their household bills continue to come in & her salary alone is not enough to keep them afloat. If you could please donate towards their living & medical expenses, it would be greatly appreciated. Many of you have already reached out with food & gift cards + offers to keep the boys or get them to practices & games. The prayers & words of encouragement are exactly what they need. Our hearts are forever grateful for the kind & loving community we live in. Thank you for caring. We will try to provide regular updates as we power through this with God’s guidance. Here is how you can help: 1. Donate: Every dollar donated will go directly towards covering household & medical expenses, hospital bills, and the ongoing costs associated with Scott's treatment and recovery. 2. Share and Spread the Word: Help us raise awareness about Scott's situation by sharing his LFEBridge campaign on your social media platforms, within your networks, and with anyone who may be able to provide support. 3. Please visit www.bethematch.org. Every three minutes, someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer like leukemia or lymphoma. For many of these patients, a bone marrow transplant is their best hope for survival. Unfortunately, finding a compatible donor is often an incredibly challenging task, as the odds of finding a perfect match are slim. That's where you come in. Take the first step towards becoming a potential match. Once you complete the online registration, you will be sent a free test kit in the mail, swab the inside of your cheek, pop it back in the mail, and that’s it. You will then be added to the database of people who could potentially save lives. If you are ever matched with someone, you will never be required to donate if you decide not to. You never know whose lives you might change. Your involvement could mean the world to someone who is fighting for their life. 4. Offer Words of Encouragement. Your kind words and thoughts mean the world to Scott, Raechel & the boys. Leave a message on this page to show your support and let them know they are not alone in this fight. We ask that you respect the family’s privacy right now as they have a lot on their plate. Instead of reaching out directly to them for more information, we plan to post milestones here so please check back for updates. A note from Scott, “Pay attention to your body, no matter your age. Don’t ignore the symptoms, seek medical attention when you don’t feel right & can’t seem to get better with rest & medications. Get swabbed for the Bone Marrow Donation Database- you never know if you will have a chance to help someone in your life.” Together, let's come alongside the Dean/Ziegler family during this difficult time. We can make a significant difference in their lives and ensure they have the resources and support necessary to navigate this challenging journey. Please donate, share, and spread the word today. God bless!!
