Please meet RAFAEL SALAS “aka PALAFOX”, a husband, a son, a brother, an uncle, a grandpa to a brand new baby. A hard working man, a family man, and the sole provider of a family of 4. On Saturday 7/29/23 our beloved brother suffered a massive stroke while sitting in front of his house. My brother had worked all day and while at work, he complained of pain to the right side of his body but remained at work to push production, sacrificing his own health. While at home and 5 hours later, he stood up and immediately collapsed. Luckily, someone saw and rushed to help. Paramedics were quickly on scene but he was unresponsive. My brother was rushed to emergency where he was diagnosed with a massive stroke that cause severe bleeding and damage to the right side of his brain and body. Doctors noted he had been suffering for over 6 hours in which his brain lacked oxygen. Unfortunately, inflammation of the brain progressed and they had to perform an emergency procedure which consisted of removing half his skull to help ease off the pressure and prevent further damage to his brain. 2 days following the surgery, the “Pro-Life, Catholic” hospital told us to start planning for hospice care and suggested he was transitioning to a coma and would be on vegetative state soon. They suggested we “remove his ventilator tube, so he can slowly stop breathing and die” and noted, if he lived, his “quality of life would be bad”. The doctors continued to insist we “turn him over to God”, and went as far as setting up a meeting with the family so that everyone could say good bye to our beloved brother. A meeting I cancelled because despite their lack of empathy, we knew in our hearts, there was and is hope for him. This is a catholic hospital that promotes a “pro-life” message but yet, was very insisting in terminating his life. They got us at our most vulnerable time, a time in which even our faith was compromised. Their lack of empathy and rush to get rid of who they called “the patient” not only broke our hearts but led us to believe our beloved brother had no chance to live. Thankfully, our faith is stronger than ever and we put his life in the hands of the Lord. Today, my brother is opening his eyes, he is moving his left hand, he responds to commands we give him, he cries, and he feels. Unfortunately we lost all trust in this facility. We feel they have demonstrated that their interest is only a financial transaction and not the recovery of a patient that is fighting for his life. We NEED HELP! We have secured a bed at a better Health care facility where they are better equipped to save lives; however, the health insurance (United Health) is not approving the transfer due to the cost of the ambulance which is significant due to him being in the ICU. My brother has a chance but not where he is today. Not in a facility that is rushing us to terminate his life. If you cannot help financially, we ask that you help with a prayer. May God Bless You and your loved ones. Please pray for my Big Brother Rafael.
