In early 2024, I caught COVID-19 – this resulted in kidney failure and a diagnosis of IgA Nephropathy (IgAN). After successful treatment with steroids, antibiotics, and other medication, eighteen months after failing, my kidney function improved greatly and my prognosis went from early death to being told I could lead a long fulfilling life, and with some lifestyle changes, I could improve my health even further. I went on to lose 30 lbs, give up alcohol, change my diet and continue to wear a mask in public spaces to avoid respiratory infections. Unfortunately, life has come to test me once again, and I have been suffering from tonsillitis for six months and have had six courses of antibiotics to no avail. About a month ago, I started to notice the impact on my kidneys and have most recently been advised by the doctor to isolate in my flat, which I am currently doing. While I have been placed on the Ear, Nose and Throat waiting list with the hopes of being put on the waiting list for a Tonsillectomy via the NHS, the entire process is estimated to take three years, providing I am successfully placed on the waiting list for a tonsillectomy. I am already in extreme pain with both my tonsils and kidneys, and I am limited to taking paracetamol which frankly does nothing to alleviate my pain. A tonsillectomy will prevent further kidney damage and the likelihood of kidney failure the longer the tonsillitis continues. The cruel irony of this situation is that, to become a priority for a tonsillectomy, my kidney function needs to drop below an eGFR of 20, but if it does drop that low, my kidneys will not recover this second time round. I have looked at every possible scenario to prevent further pain and irrevocable damage. At this stage, a private tonsillectomy is my only option. As I cannot currently work, I have very limited funds, meaning that I do not qualify to take out a medical loan. By cutting out certain comforts, and thankfully not needing to put the heating on at this time of the year, I have managed to save for the cost of a consultation and I will continue to save all I possibly can for any additional costs and my recovery. I have attached the email which outlines the costs at the hospital closest to me offering a tonsillectomy. I’m aware nearly everyone has been hit by the cost-of-living crisis and that this is a long shot, but please, if you can, help me. All money will go towards the surgery, and I will end the crowdfunder if I raise the £3600.
