Did you know that the ‘Nightmare on Main St’ we know and love will not take place this year!! The street will be closed, but no stage, no DJ, no music, no street costume contest, no fire pits.Do you enjoy the Nightmare on Main Street tradition? Do you want to see it saved in time for next Saturday? There is a chance of saving it, we could make this happen if there is a will…When I found out there was no Halloween street party I started calling around to see if there was anything that could be done. I talked to the city, insurance companies and anyone that had been connected to putting this event on in the past. The good news is that if we as a community want to put this party on, it is still technically possible. The two issues are:Insurance – The City have paid for the street to be closed but some entity needs to take out an event insurance policy for the night. I have spoken to several of the bars/restaurants on Main Street as well as several insurance companies. I will have a lot more information on Monday but I am hoping that this particular piece of the puzzle is solvable.Funding – Last year the cost of putting on Nightmare on Main Street was $2,000. Unfortunately the City cut this from their budget this year. The money covered the stage, the DJ, the MC, sound system, security etc. I have reached out to many of these people that can help with these aspects and they are all ready to participate if the insurance permit is secured.I was hoping that this page could serve as a forum to see what people’s thought were. Is the Nightmare on Main street tradition something that you want to keep going? If you do, please like this page and share your thoughts. I have a Go Fund Me page waiting to launch (we wouldn’t need that much money). Shall I launch it and see what happens?I love Halloween, but more importantly I love Ketchum Halloween, on Main Street. I think I can honestly say that I have attended all 21 Halloweens since I moved here in 1994. Back in the day as many of you will no doubt remember Nightmare on Main Street was huge and before my time, during the Slavey’s era, this night was legendary. There are many things that have changed about Ketchum since I moved here, but none of those changes have diminished how extraordinary this place is. The mountains and the scenery that surround us are incredible, that is beyond dispute. But I think it’s the events this town puts on that really infuse the town with the vibrancy and fun that nurtures our sense of community and keeps us energized as a town. The Gallery Walk, The Trailing of the Sheep, the 4th of July breakfast etc are great, but events like The Ketchum Wide Open and Nightmare on Main Street in my mind are just as important because they are about us, the locals of Ketchum. I feel like these events, in slack, are our opportunity, to celebrate together, what we as locals, love about this Valley. For my part, I am willing to do as much organization as is necessary to make it happen. I have worked for Smith Optics for 11 years as the special events and trade show manager, so I’m definitely up for the challenge. Thanks,Nick
