We are Nathan, Ruthanne, Lillian, and Abraham (not pictured) Saunders. Within the past year, we moved to Columbia, Nathan started a new job, and we bought a house. We also received a blessing in May with the birth of little Abraham! We are very excited to be settling down into a great community and to be raising our children in Columbia.Unfortunately, just over a month after moving into our house, floodwaters filled our garage and crawlspace. Although we thought our damage was minimal, we have since discovered that our duct work (which was submerged in water) must be replaced, we have mold that must be treated, and foundation issues that must be addressed. Because we are not in a fllood zone, we did not purchase flood insurance, and our homeowners insurance does not cover the damage we sustained. We applied for assistance from FEMA and recieved $240. Although we are grateful for this money, our expenses have far surpassed this amount. We appealed FEMA's decision, but our appeal was denied. We now find ourselves in need of financial assistance. Right now, we need at least $5,500 as we begin to address the most costly repair -- replacing our duct work. We expect more expenses to arise as we receive estimates for treating the mold and repairing our foundation. With the birth of our second child and the purchase of our home both occurring so recently, our savings were simply tapped out. We were, quite simply, not prepared for this extremely rare weather event. We love our new home and our new neighborhood, and making sure that we can continue to maintain our residence here is so important to us. We would be forever appreciative of any amount of money we receive. It would be a true blessing that we would never forget.
