Over the last week, Northern Belize has been hit by the torrential rains of a tropical depression. In Sarteneja, extensive flooding has left the village in crisis. 12 families (65 people - most of whom are children) have lost everything. Floodwaters, rapidly rising to five feet, left no time for families in the low lying areas to evacuate possessions, and have left them with no food, clothes, or beds. Drinking water has become contaminated; making water purification tablets an urgent need. Lives have been derailed in a matter of days, and help is needed to get them back on track while their homes remain underwater. Another 91 homes (380 people - again mostly children) have had extensive flood damage to bedding, clothes, school bags for children and electrical appliances. While not as critical, these are families who will find it hard to replace these belongings. Those of you who have volunteered with Wildtracks or Blue Ventures might know some of the families who have been affected by the extreme flooding.A donation can help to cover some of the most urgent needs, providing food, clothes, bedding, and water purification tablets to those most in need. Donations will be channeled through the Sarteneja Village Council, to be used wherever they are needed most.Thank you so much, your support will go a long way. This appeal is being run by Wildtracks, a non profit organization based in Sarteneja, Belize in partnership with Blue Ventures. Whilst Wildtracks is primarily focused on conservation of biodiversity, it will not ignore an emergency on its doorstep or in it's community. Wildtracks is working closely with the state's village council to address the urgent and immediate needs of those most affected by the flooding. Visit Wildtracks at www.Wildtracksbelize.org for more information on our activities. The campaign leader is Emma Farlow, the Wildtracks education and outreach officer. If you would like further information on how you can help, please contact her on [email redacted].The funds are being raised based on an allocation of Bz$1,000 (US$500) per family for the twelve families, to cover emergency supplies such as mattresses, bedding, diapers, cooking equipment and food. Should the appeal raise more than the initial USD$6,000 (CAD$8000), the balance will be used to provide replacement school supplies and building repairs. The funds will be transferred to the Wildtracks FirstCaribbean account in Belize, via Emma Farlow, and distributed by Wildtracks and the village council to the families in need, with as little delay as possible. All funds will be used for direct assistance - all administration costs are being covered by Wildtracks. Help us help these people to get their lives back on track.
